Cameras for Christmas ~ 2008 ~ Point & Shoots |
| For the majority of consumers the perfect camera is
portable and takes good snapshots with a press of the shutter. In the
trade these little jewels are known as Point & Shoots, and with some
notable advances in software such as facial recognition and in-camera
processing to correct exposure and lens aberrations, even a beginner can
produce professional looking portraits and landscape photos.

| Canon A470 $89.99 While controls are limited, you won't find a better camera under $100. With 7.1 Megapixels and a 38mm - 132mm equivalent lens the A470 offers clean images indoors or out with good resolution for larger prints. Review |
| Pentax Optio M50 $107.95 The M50 features an 8 Megapixel sensor and a 5x (36-180mm equivalent) lens. In addition to face recognition the M50 can also detect a smile and activate the shutter. The M50 also uses auto ISO to increase sensitivity and shutter speed in low light and telephoto shots to reduce the effects of camera shake. Review |
| Canon 590 IS $112.95 The 590 is an upgrade from the excellent 570 of last fall. Though it has been superceded by the A1000 it's still a very capable camera and a genuine Best Buy. With a full range of controls in addition to presets for landscapes, portraits, sports, etc., this is the perfect camera for beginners who intend to pursue photography as a hobby or even as a profession. Image quality is excellent, and new to the "A" series is automatic red eye removal which eliminates post-processing of portraits and group shots that require a flash. Review |
| Canon A1000 IS $142.95 With 10 Megapixels and a 35mm-140mm equivalent zoom the A1000 produces an image that can be cropped and still fill a large canvas. In addition to the standard facial recognition found on most cameras, the A1000 also offers the ability to select a particular face in a crowd and it will maintain a focus on that person even if they move. Now anyone can be a paparazzi.
